How to Teach Preschool Children Foreign Languages

Posted on 06-09-2017

Have you ever considered teaching your child a foreign language? There are endless advantages to being bilingual, as it paves the way to exploring a new culture and communicating with different people. Children at young ages have a stronger ability to absorb the information they are exposed to. So, here are a few ways you can get started teaching your preschooler a new language.

Give your preschooler some context.

Children are more inclined to pay attention to what they’re being taught when they have an understanding as to why it’s important. Tell your preschooler about the country where the language is spoken, the types of food they eat, how their culture differs from American culture, and more. Once they have a bit of background information they’ll be eager to learn the language.

Use a picture book.

Try flipping through a picture book together and point to common objects such as tables, chairs, windows, and doors. First, say the words in English and then repeat their names in the second language you are teaching your child. They will quickly understand that these words mean the same thing and represent a certain object, and will be able to recall this information when they see the object in person.

Try different apps.

Utilize educational videos such as Rosetta Stone, or websites and apps like Little Pim and Gus on the Go. These resources are perfect for children who are hands-on learners and like interactive practice.

Learning a new language may not come as easily as you hoped, so remember to be patient with your little one. If they stumble over certain words or struggle with conjugations, spend extra working with them. Set an encouraging example for your preschooler by having a positive attitude, and keep trying!
